Building an Entrepreneurial Hub for the Fishing Sector in Jounieh

The Building Alliance for Local Advancement, Development, and Investment Program (BALADI), funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by René Moawad Foundation (RMF), has completed the “Building an Entrepreneurial Hub for the Fishing Sector in Jounieh” project.

This project is implemented by RMF  and ifalls under BALADI program funded by USAID. It aims at improving the economic condition of 150 persons including fishermen and their families who are living below the minimum monthly wage rate in Lebanon. Moreover the project aims at re-activating the harbor as an economic center as part of a broader development strategy for the city of Jounieh that addresses territorial, social and economic issues.

BALADI program contributed 226,800 $ to assist the Jounieh Municipality in  rehabilitating the Jounieh fishermen’s harbor, the boat repair workshop, and other premises, in addition to renovating the fishermen cooking station and fish auction selling venue in order to improve the living standard of the fishermen and the related community by providing solutions to reduce management costs of the fishing activities, improve marketing conditions of the fishing products and expand the margin of profit of the fishermen. The project will create job opportunities, especially for women by upgrading the value chain of the fresh produce and business diversification interventions.

At the port, the fisherman sell their “catch of the day” on daily basis either in whole sale or through an auction to the visitors of the venue. The place will be open to the public as of 30 September and the sale is from early morning (7am) till 7pm.
