When in Berlin, visit Patisserie “Konditorei G. Buchwald”! The pastry shop was founded in Cottbus in 1852 and is now the oldest patisserie in Berlin. The specialty is their Baumkuchen (tree cake).
Chocolate truffle cake, specialty chocolate Baumkuchen, the world-famous Sacher cake, and chocolate eclair: I believe we ordered from everything. Arrive at the display fridge and find your way to the seating space. Choose a table and wait to be served. A waitress approached us ten minutes later.
It’s old, looking like a traditional house, filled with round and square tables under a high ceiling. No music, the sounds of people chitchatting, a wooden floor and pictures of the four previous generations preparing their cakes.
Now for the taste: the Sacher is extremely dry. The eclair is extremely sweet. The signature Baumkuchen has nothing special about it. I’ve had better cakes in the streets in Beirut. The truffle chocolate cake is way too buttery. The espresso is too bitter and too acidic.
Nothing is worth coming here for, not the service, not the cakes: an old place indeed I don’t recommend you visit; you will be spending your money on nothing.
