5 Family Friendly Adventures in Virginia

With its rich history, stunning Blue Ridge Mountains, and vibrant cities, Virginia is an ideal destination for family travel. Whether you’re looking for a beach getaway or a mountain retreat, Virginia has something for everyone. Here are five family-friendly activities to explore in the Old Dominion State.

Shenandoah National Park

The 200,000-acre Shenandoah National Park is home to some of the most beautiful scenery in Virginia—or anywhere else! There are plenty of trails to explore, including one that runs 105 miles along the spine of the Blue Ridge Mountains—the Appalachian Trail. Hiking through this picturesque park provides great opportunities to see wildlife (including black bears!) as well as spectacular views from overlooks like Skyline Drive and Hawksbill Mountain.

Virginia Beach

With its wide beaches and ample sunshine, Virginia Beach is a great place for families looking to enjoy some fun in the sun. Families can spend time at one of the many beaches along the Chesapeake Bay or take a boat tour around Cape Henry where they can observe dolphins swimming in their natural habitat. In addition to the beach, there are plenty of other activities such as mini golfing, amusement parks, and outdoor concerts.

Lynchburg

Taking a day trip to Lynchburg, Virginia with your family is an exciting way to explore the historic district and soak up the unique culture of this area. The town's main landmark is Point of Honor, a house built in 1815 by Dr. George Cabell for his family. It serves as a reminder of Lynchburg's vast early history, along with its Civil War battles, especially at Fort Johnson. Tourists looking for more entertainment can explore the festivals held throughout the year that celebrate the city's cultural heritage, or head on over to SeaQuest aquarium for an exciting day of learning about and experiencing marine life.

There are also many green spaces like Blackwater Creek Park and Percival's Island Natural Area that offer fun outdoor activities such as fishing and kayaking or simply appreciate nature’s beauty in its lush landscape. All combined, Lynchburg makes for an unforgettable experience on any family day trip.

Colonial Williamsburg

Step back in time with a visit to Colonial Williamsburg—the world’s largest living history museum. This historic town allows visitors to experience what life was like during colonial times by visiting reenactments of homes and shops from that era as well as taking part in interactive programs designed especially for children. It’s an educational experience your family won’t soon forget!

Washington D.C.

A must-see destination when visiting Virginia is Washington D.C., less than an hour drive away from Richmond or Norfolk. Spend a day taking advantage of all that this capital city has to offer with visits to monuments like The Lincoln Memorial or The White House (if you plan ahead). Or if you prefer something more hands on and interactive then check out one of the many Smithsonian Museums located throughout D.C.—they offer something for everyone!

From its stunning mountains to its vibrant cities, Virginia offers families with plenty of opportunities for adventure! Whether you're looking for outdoor activities like hiking through Shenandoah National Park or exploring historic sites like Monticello and Colonial Williamsburg--Virginia has it all! Make sure your next vacation includes these five family friendly adventures so your whole gang can create lasting memories together!
